Pilates Ball

Some types of pilates are done with extensive pieces of equipment; however, other require little to no equipment at all.  Mat pilates is becoming extremely popular because it can be done at home and requires minimal pieces of equipment.  One of the newest exercises added to the pilates mat routine incorporates a pilates ball to add strength to the routine.  These balls are typically the size of a bowling ball and are made from a foam-like material that is easy to grasp with your arms or even your legs.  Balls come in a variety of different weights to help build strength in the muscles throughout your body.  While some balls weigh only 5 pounds others can weigh as much as 40 pounds.

There are various ways a pilates ball can be used; however, the most common is in a lifting manor.  One of the most common pilates exercises involving a ball requires individuals to place the ball on the ground in front of them.  Individuals are then required to squat until their knees are bent to a 90 degree angle. They can then pick up the ball and slowly lift if over their head as they rise out of the squat. This exercise should be repeated and the ball should be placed back on the ground.  This exercise helps to stretch your leg muscles and strengthen your arm muscles at the same time.

Another popular workout involving the pilates ball requires individuals to lay on their back upon a pilates floor mat.  The ball should be placed between both hands which should be extended above the head.  The individual must then raise both their arms and legs into the air assume a V shape.  The ball should then be passed from the hands to the feet.  The ball should now be placed between the feet as they are lowered back to the ground.  The individual can keep passing the ball back and forth using this method for many repetitions.  This exercise helps to stretch and build strength in the arms, legs and the core of the body.
